The human mind is a mysterious but essential component of our being. We can neither live, enjoy, nor make sense of life without it. But like an iceberg, there is that visible portion we know and with which we are familiar. That portion is known as the conscious mind. It is that part of ourselves that we interact with on a daily basis and which helps us to communicate with our fellow human beings on the stage of life.
Then there is that part of the mind commonly called the Subconscious Mind. Technically known as the unconscious, it is that area of the mind that, like the iceberg, is submerged below our line of sight.
Whether or not the terms ‘subconscious’ or ‘unconscious’ are truly accurate, the fact is there is indeed a part of the mind that contains secrets known only to God. This is where the bulk of the mystery is located.
Many times we struggle to understand others and yet there are huge chunks of our own selves of which we know very little.
We have grown dangerously complacent about the secret workings of that vast reservoir of thoughts, feelings and emotions that we call the Subconscious Mind. Like a toddler left unsupervised, the subconscious mind is capable of getting into all sorts of mischief.
Many times as a form of release, it floods the conscious mind with runaway thoughts, destructive emotions and shameful secret scenarios. How are we to bring such a vast unknown expanse under our control? This book touches upon the answer. We can only control that which we know. It would mean that we need assistance from a power greater than our inner selves to control the vast unknown.
It would mean that there are no user serviceable parts inside of the enormously immense 'machinery' of our hidden hearts and minds. It would mean that we need to refer all repair and restoration to the Manufacturer (John 1:1-3) who works through those who are His qualified service personnel (Jer 3:15), trusting that even though we have violated the warranty, the Creator is still able to bring restoration (Ps 23:1-3) and redemption (Eph 1:7) to our souls.
