Dr. Josh Axe, in his national bestselling book Keto Diet, claims that in 30 days you can lose weight, balance hormones, boost brain health, and reverse disease with the Keto diet. I lost 32 pounds and feel 10 years younger. It worked for me!
The Keto diet is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. The diet makes the body burn fats rather than carbohydrates. Normally, the carbohydrates contained in food are converted into glucose, which is then transported around the body and is used as fuel. Glucose is a simple sugar. In short, a high carbohydrate diet forces your body to run on sugar. If carbohydrates are withheld from the body, however, the liver converts fat into fatty acids and what is called “ketone bodies.” These “ketone bodies” travel to through the body and replace sugar (glucose) as an energy source. An elevated level of “ketone bodies” in the blood is a state known as ketosis, and there is evidence that this is a healthy state to be in.
There may seem to be a lot of new terminology in a Keto diet. But, in fact, it is a simple diet. “Keto” is short for “ketone bodies” or “ketosis” (both mean the same thing) and these terms simply refer to a diet that allows the body (instead of running on sugar) to convert fat to fatty acids and run on that. “Fatty acids” are sometimes called “essential fatty acids” because humans and other animals must eat them. The body requires essential fatty acids for good health but cannot synthesize them (cannot produce them on its own). The Keto diet gives the body the essential fatty acids it needs for optimum health.
There are many examples of how a Keto diet can improve a person’s health.
As one example, a keto diet leads to a reduction in the frequency of epileptic seizures. Around half of children and young people with epilepsy who have tried some form of this diet saw the number of seizures drop by at least half.
To summarize, “Keto” is short for a ketosis diet and this is a diet that is low in carbs and high in fat (similar to the Atkins diet and other low-carb diets).
The diet involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. This reduction in carbs puts your body into the metabolic (fuel-burning) state called ketosis. When this happens, your body becomes incredibly efficient at burning fat for energy. It turns fat into ketones in the liver, which can supply energy for the entire body.
The Keto diet has been shown to cause reductions in blood sugar and insulin levels. This has numerous health benefits.
