The United States Constitution is the foundational legal document that establishes the structure, powers, and limitations of the federal government. Drafted in 1787 and ratified in 1788, it replaced the Articles of Confederation, creating a stronger and more unified national framework. The Constitution begins with the Preamble, which outlines its core purpose: to form a more perfect union, establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure liberty for current and future generations.

The main body of the Constitution is divided into seven Articles. Article I establishes the legislative branch, defining the powers of Congress and outlining how laws are created. Article II creates the executive branch, detailing the responsibilities of the President and the mechanisms for election and removal. Article III establishes the judicial branch, including the Supreme Court and the broader federal court system. Articles IV through VII address the relationships between states, the amendment process, federal authority, and the requirements for ratification.

Over time, the Constitution has been expanded through Amendments, beginning with the Bill of Rights—ten Amendments added in 1791 that protect individual freedoms such as speech, religion, due process, and fair trials. Subsequent Amendments have abolished slavery, guaranteed equal protection under the law, expanded voting rights, clarified presidential succession, and addressed numerous other issues central to American governance and civil liberties. Together, the Constitution and its Amendments form a living framework that guides the nation’s political system, balances power among branches, and protects the rights of its citizens.
