BEAUTIFUL LOOK INTO A BEAUTIFUL SOUL Slices of Soul by Harmony Kent was an evocative collection of poetry which gives us glimpses into the life lived by the author. Some more poignant than others, but all an intriguing slice into a different view/life/being. Many were quite emotive and truly brought me into the author’s headspace/heart space. The fact that, per the foreword, most of these were written relatively close together in time is astonishing. The author’s voice definitely grows throughout the collection in a noticeable and relatable way. I love the “chapter” names: shaved head, short hair, long hair. It ties everything together in relation to the author’s stay in a Zen Buddhist Temple which was clearly a poignant moment in time. The cover was simplistic in its beauty. It captures the Zen aspect and draws the eye. I liked the small stone cairn pictures throughout to tie everything back to the cover.

PROFOUND AND INTRIGUING This is a poem book that contains beautiful words that are inspiring and meaningful. It has a great cover that fits the theme perfectly. The foreword section nicely puts the context of these poems into the proper perspective. I have read many of Harmony Kent’s books in the past, but I had no idea she also wrote poems. I’ve never known anyone who has actually lived in a Zen Buddhist Temple, much less for the span of 13 years. There are 7 poems that the author competed during this period in her life. These are under the “Shaved Head” section. The rest were written afterwards and are under the “Short Hair” section. The following poems really resonated with me personally: Tranquility, The River of Life, Flashes, and Goodbyes. These poems as well as the others are powerful and moving. The combination of words are authentic, raw, and thought provoking. The poems cover a whole range of emotional themes and include isolation, rejection, loss, suffering, anger, peace, and love. Ms. Kent unashamedly bares her soul through the verses and reflect her journey through life.
