"The Glade is a horror story in the mould of Stephen King, and rendered the more so by its faint echoes of Pet Cemetery and the even stronger resonance of the pervasive malignancy of It.” —Review by Brian O’Hare

KEEP OUT OF THE GLADE!! This is the first book I’ve read by this author so I wasn’t totally sure what to expect but it sounded like something that would appeal to me so I thought I would give it a go. The story opens with a woman being arrested for her husband’s murder but even that isn’t as simple as it sounds and, with scenes alternating between past and present, we discover what lead to that murder and also why it wasn’t actually a murder in any real sense of the word. You would imagine that moving to live in a beautiful glade in the Forest of Dean would be a good thing and for Helen it turns out to be a true life saver, but at a cost that might not be worth the price after all. Life in the Glade might seem idylic to start with but there are forces lurking out there that have their own agenda and they wont be denied. It’s hard to fully describe this book without giving away too many spoilers and that truly would spoil the story – but if you like a good creepy story that will make you think and also declare several times “I didn’t see that coming” then this will be a good read for you. There are twists and turns, betrayals and violence, fear and evil forces and the stark warning – if the locals warn you to stay away from a glade in the woods they might just know something!!
I'D CERTAINLY RECOMMEND 'THE GLADE' TO EVERYONE WHO LIKES A LITTLE SUSPENSE IN THEIR LIVES The story begins in the most beautiful of settings, deep in the forest of Dean. After a terminally ill woman and her husband spend a week holidaying there, she discovers her illness is somewhat eased. Going against local villagers’ advice about living on the site of an old ruin in the forest, they return, buy the old cottage and rebuild it to live in. Although she continues to improve in health while she’s there, things are not as straightforward as they seem. There are forces at work that make this into an exciting, suspenseful read. I thoroughly enjoyed this fast-paced, page turning horror story, even though I wasn’t sure what to make of the first spooky incident, laugh or be terrified. It was so bizarre! The rest of the story left me in no doubt. The weird goings on The Glade were definitely scary and horrific. A true horror story evocative of Stephen King’s books. Harmony Kent does a great job of creating believable, authentic characters. Her descriptions of the locations are superb too. A brilliantly written tale which I enjoyed so much, I will read it again. I’d certainly recommend ‘The Glade’ to everyone who likes a little suspense in their lives.
'The Glade' is a suspenseful mystery mixed with paranormal horror. Helen is arrested for killing her husband, and as she begins to explain her story to her friend/lawyer we go back to what brought her to her current situation. The story begins in the present and then starts to jump back and forth to the past to unravel what lead to Helen's current situation. I thought that the way this was done amped up the suspense and this is what held my interest in the beginning. I didn't get very attached to the characters, but I was kept interested all the way to the end by the story itself, which was unusual and intriguing. WELL CRAFTED PARANORMAL HORRO I found this book easy to get in to and very much enjoyed the vivid descriptions, which added to the creepy atmosphere. It was very well written and I would recommend it to fans of paranormal horror. I look forward to reading more from this author!
Move over Stephen King, Harmony Kent is coming through!!! Wow - what a book. I could barely put it down and found myself fighting sleep to just read one more chapter each night. The perfect mix of mystery, suspense, thriller & just a bit of romance as well. Maybe not a book to read on a camping trip in the middle of a dark forest ... unless you're a real thrill seeker
I RECOMMEND THIS CREEPY STORY! I’m a huge fan of Stephen King so I couldn’t wait to read this after seeing the comparison. Although, “Pet Cemetery” isn’t one of my favorite Stephen King books, “The Glade” didn’t have in it what I disliked in Mr. King’s book but instead had the intrigue I did like. Helen and Geoff Wenstrop spent a holiday in a small village. They found some property, and against warnings not to purchase it, they did and built a house. Helen later goes there to die from cancer, but mysteriously recovers. I found myself reading late into the night to find out how Helen got to the point she did. I liked the story being told from two different time lines and eagerly awaited the moment they converged. The relationship between husband and wife was strained and a bit confusing--as were some of the other relationships. The landscape was its own character and added to the story. At times I found myself struggling to have much empathy for Helen and her decisions. But, there were many plot twists that I didn’t see coming after that. When the two story lines did meet up, I had many aha moments that changed my perspective of Helen and other characters while clearing the confusion. “The Glade” is a unique horror tale. I recommend this creepy story to those who love horror presented in a King-like fashion, with a bit of a romance thrown in.
