Operation Market Garden: A Bridge Too Far - Relive History

Delve into the heart of Operation Market Garden, one of WWII's most audacious and controversial airborne offensives.

In September 1944, with the Allies surging through France, Field Marshal Montgomery envisioned a daring plan: seize vital bridges across the Netherlands, opening a corridor into Germany and ending the war by Christmas. "Market" was the airborne assault, aiming to capture key bridges at Eindhoven, Nijmegen, and Arnhem. "Garden" was the ground assault spearheaded by British XXX Corps, tasked with linking up with the paratroopers. Victory would bypass the formidable Siegfried Line, crippling German industry.

However, intelligence underestimated German strength and resolve. Fierce resistance, coupled with unexpected armored divisions near Arnhem, bogged down the British 1st Airborne Division. XXX Corps faced delays and setbacks. The result? A bloody stalemate. While Eindhoven and Nijmegen bridges were captured, the vital Arnhem bridge remained in German hands. After nine grueling days, the British 1st Airborne was forced to withdraw, leaving behind heavy casualties.

Operation Market Garden failed to achieve its objectives. Although brave Allied forces displayed incredible resilience and courage, the operation proved to be a costly tactical setback, delaying the Allied advance into Germany.
